Imagine spider monkeys effortlessly leaping from branch to branch. Now, picture me huffing and puffing, awkwardly hoisting myself up a tree. With the upper body strength of a T-Rex, I often forget to use my legs, resulting in tired arms and quick descents. Yet, knowing this, I still signed up for the Arboreal Climbing Park at Sky Adventures in Monteverde, Costa Rica.
Becoming an Adventure Traveler
In recent years, I’ve transformed into an adventure traveler, always eager to try something new and push my limits, even if it scares me. This time, tree climbing was the challenge. Costa Rica offers a plethora of adventure activities like zip lines, rafting, night hikes, horseback riding, volcano hikes, surfing, ATV tours, and even bungee jumping. During my first trip here in 2012, I tried zip-lining and surfing but couldn’t muster the courage for bungee jumping. When I discovered the tree climbing area at Sky Adventures, it checked all the boxes for me: new, adventurous, and a personal challenge.
Getting Ready to Climb
After a guided Sky Walk, I met my guide, who suited me up with a harness and helmet. I often find myself wearing helmets on vacation, a testament to my adventurous spirit. As the only one signed up for the climb, I appreciated the dedicated attention, even if it meant no rest breaks. Sky Adventures offers seven trees to climb, ranging from 33 to 60 feet. I aimed for the easy ones and attempted three.
The Climbing Experience
At the first tree, my guide explained the automatic belay system and gave a brief climbing tutorial. Sky Adventures uses straps to keep climbing holds in place without damaging the trees, reflecting Costa Rica’s strong conservation ethos. These straps also provide extra standing or holding spots. My guide demonstrated the climb and descent, making it look easy. How hard could it be?
Reality Check:
Taking my first step up, I quickly realized I had underestimated the challenge. The initial holds were manageable, but as I climbed higher, panic set in. My legs wobbled, breathing quickened, and my arms turned to Jell-O—only ten feet off the ground! Despite my guide’s helpful instructions, I lost my grip and descended rapidly. Surprisingly, the descent was the most fun part, reminiscent of abseiling without the effort.
Persevering Despite the Struggle
Determined, I tried again. Though easier the second time, I encountered the same issue. On my third attempt, I made more progress but still didn’t reach the top to ring the bell. After a fourth try, we moved to another tree. Initially, I scampered up, but fatigue soon set in, and I descended again. My guide even gave me a forearm massage to ease the muscle tension as I laughed at my clumsiness.
Final Attempts and Small Victories
By the third and final tree, I was exhausted. Despite feeling okay on the ground, my arm strength quickly waned during the climb. After a few more attempts, I called it a day, feeling no shame in my effort.
Reflecting on the Experience
Although I didn’t perform as well as others might, I was proud of myself. I pushed my limits and didn’t give up. With a few more push-ups, maybe next time, I’ll ring that bell for all to hear.
Conclusion
Tree climbing at Sky Adventures in Monteverde, Costa Rica, was a thrilling and challenging experience. Despite the difficulty, I enjoyed pushing myself and embracing the adventure. Costa Rica’s commitment to conservation and diverse adventure opportunities make it a fantastic destination for thrill-seekers like me. If you’re looking for a unique adventure, give tree climbing a try—you might surprise yourself!
